Throwback Thursday: Who’s No. 1?

Tavon Young in his high school days.

If he continues to play the way he’s been playing, perhaps the Temple Owls should abandon their plans of rotating No. 1 this season.

Tavon Young is playing like he wants to keep the honor for good. He reminds me of another young who used to roam centerfield for the Owls’ defense, Anthony Young (no relation). That Young played for coach Wayne Hardin and coach Bruce Arians and could make a jump on the ball like no DB I’ve seen before or since. He was like that guy you play pickup basketball with at the YMCA. You know, the guy who would always jump in front of a pass you think you are throwing to a wide open guy underneath the hoop.

Tavon Young is getting that reputation as a football ballhawk.

So for Throwback Thursday we’ll take you way back to Tavon Young’s high school days. When Temple signed him, there was a lot of excitement on North Broad Street and he’s lived up to the hype. He also wore No. 1 at Potomac High School. Another great Owl was also from Potomac, 1986 Heisman Trophy runner-up Paul Palmer but Paul played for rival Winston Churchill in that town.

  1. This kid should be used on offense. he seems faster than our wide receivers.

  2. Interesting idea but with the passing in the AAC I think I would keep him at cb. Thought he started to come on towards the end of last season.

  3. When is Alex Wells coming back? Looks like Temple will have a pretty good secondary for years to come with the JUCO’s, freshmen DB’s this year and recruits coming in next year. Plus, Tavon Young is still just a JR.

    • 4 more weeks for alex. …. colin thompson makes his owl debut at Homecoming. don”t know when jabo lee will see the field. kid was a flat-out superstar in s.carolina preps.

  4. After watching Houston and UCF last night, Temple has the talent to beat both of those teams.., key part of the schedule coming up., some teams are great defensively, and some teams have Sunday players at the QB position

    • I came to the same conclusion. Houston panicked and went away from O’Korn for the mobile guy, who doesn’t really make good decisions with the ball. I hope we’re using this bye week to game plan for the short Houston week. we can beat both of these teams. I hope our run game shows up by then.

  5. Temple had several great defensive backs back in the Anthony Young days, Kevin Ross among them – Temple was becoming known as Defensive Back U. Several had careers in the NFL. Keep up the good work Anthony.

  6. we also had a nice run of tailbacks through Montel Harris and starting with Anthony Anderson (heck, even Tom Sloan, Paul Loughran and Mike Busch).

  7. Was watching the Broncos game and was reminded Todd Bowles was another great Temple D-back.
